25 Years EGCC Anniversary Go Tournament - 21 & 22 October

In order to celebrate its 25 years existence, the European Go Cultural Center organises a special tournament on the week-end of the 21st and 22nd of October.

The EGCC is located in Amstelveen, only a 2 hours drive from Brussels. This is an excellent opportunity to take part to a major European event, close to Belgium.

European pro qualification tournament

This year, a 6th European professional player will be selected by a qualifying tournament in which about (*) the 16 best - amateur, of course - European players take part.

(*) some are missing: the Mitic brothers, Fionin, Debarre,...

It is a knock-out tournament with "2 lives" for the 3 first round (after, normal K-O).

The 3 first rounds are played in Wien on 15+16/06 and the 3 final rounds in Czechia on 13+14/07...

21/05: 2017 Belgian Blitz championship

Weather will probably be rainy this next Sunday. So, why not to try to be Belgian champion by participating in a fun one-day tournament: the quick games (Blitz) Belgian championship (15 minutes as time allowance).
This tournament is played with (reduced) handicap so that everyone has chance to win it !
Participation is free of charge, but only for members of the Belgian Go Federation.

Top Chinese pros study with Alphago; match AlphaGo vs. Ke Jie (presently best player in the world)

Soon (May 23 to 27) a summit named "the Future of Go" will gather China’s top players and leading A.I. experts in Wuzhen (China).

The summit will feature a variety of game formats involving "AlphaGo" and top Chinese players:
1. “Pair Go” — A game where one Chinese pro will play against another...with both having AlphaGo as teammate!
2. “Team Go” — A game between AlphaGo and a five-players team of top pros working together
3. "Match Bot vs. the best (human) player" - A match Ke Jie vs AlphaGo (in 3 games)

The 1st (ever) World Go Championship coming soon (21 to 23 March)

For the 1st time in the history of go, a "world championship" will be organized.
It will take place in Osaka on 21-23 March 2017.

There will be 4 competitors: the best player of each of the 3 big countries + "Zen" defending the AI (Artificial Intelligence) side!

The human representatives will be
Iwama Yuta (JP)
Park Junghwan (KR)
Mi Yuting (CN) (suprinsingly, not Ke Jie)

For the 1st time in go history, there will be a "World Champion" (...with "Zen" as one of the 4 competitors !)

For the 1st time, a "world champion" will be selected by a specific competition (to be organized in Osaka in March 2017).

There will be 4 competitors: the best player of each of the 3 big countries (South Korea, China, Japan)...and "Zen" defending the AI (Artificial Intelligence) side!

Japanese representative will be Iwama Yuta. Probable players for China will be Ke Jie, and for Korea: Park Junghwan

This will be very exciting!

The "Zen" team expects to overcome "Alpha Go" in 2017...and plays legendary Cho Chi Kun in a 3 games-match in November.

"Zen", the best publicly available software, has made incredible progress the last months (I reported he won a match against German champion Lukas Krämer, 6-d, by 3-1 in September).

The objective of its developers is now to beat "Alpha Go" before end 2017 ! Yes, guys !

The team managed to organize a test match of 3 games against the legendary Cho Chi Kun starting just now (end November).

Cho is certainly not as strong as he was in the eigties, but he is one of the most prestigious go players. He has won no less than...75 titles !
